Smolder

Just learned that Smolder, a thickened dye painted and appliqued silk panel, will be at the Miami International Airport from mid July through mid October.  It is part of the   Art Cloth Network's Material Views traveling exhibit.  Thrilled!  Think of all the visitors who will be seeing art cloth...

Subterranean is the Name of My New Quilt

Hand dyed and printed cotton fabrics comprise the pieced ground.  Lots of hand stitching, french knots and running stitches hold it all together.  And the corded "worms" crawl across the surface. 

Needle Lace

Undulating needle lace fabric I made from snippets of fabric, tulle, ribbon, yarn, threads, unspun silk and wool and anything else I could find around the studio in hot reds!  The new fabric is 16" x 23" but has been dried and stitched in gentle waves so that it is now displayed at 16" x 16" and about an inch deep in places.  This is a detail shot.

Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum Here I Come!

Gyres 10 has just been juried into the Evolutions exhibit in Golden, Colorado.  The show will be up from January 23 - April 22, 2017.   I stitched fabric onto the canvas substrate so that it pops off the surface then HEAVILY painted the piece.  It is one from my Gyres series which deals with the ever-expanding swirling Garbage Patches in our oceans.

Amulets and Other Small Work at Hagafen Cellars

Wonderful opening celebration on Nov. 6 at Hagafen Cellars in Napa.  Beautiful autumn day, lots of happy imbibers and art appreciators.    There are 23 pieces of my work up in the Barrel Building; they will remain into March.     Note my helper:  Aidan, my LYFT driver who jumped out of his car and spent an hour making the whole process efficient and fun!

 

Lascaux '21

My Urban Graffiti quilt, based on images from a skate park in London, a food truck on the Big Island of Hawaii and screens I made myself, is one of 15 juried into a Quilts on the Wall show now up at the South Bay Contemporary Gallery in San Pedro, CA.   Up till Nov. 26.  Give them a call before showing up as their hours vary.

Confluence Walk Through - A BIG Success!

On Saturday, October 15, I had the pleasure of leading about 35 visitors through our exhibit at the New England Quilt Museum.  The building is part of the restoration of the city of Lowell, MA, a former textile mill town.   There's a large shop downstairs and MANY lovely gallery spaces up.   We had about 30 pieces in the show and here you can get an idea of how it looked.    Curatorial Director Pam Weeks did a beautiful job of hanging the artwork.

More Confluence "Eye Candy"

Trying to get the word out about the closing walk through on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 11 at the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell, MA.    Over 30 amazing quilts by 5 West Coast artists all on the topic of water.     This is Joolama III.  All hand printed fabrics depicting the former sea bed which is now the Outback of central Australia.    Yes, all those white dots were hand cut and hand sewn by yours truly!!

Confluence is closing at the New England Quilt Museum

In July, I saw a biography of Eva Hesse, a German  American painter/sculptor.  I was inspired by how she eventually began to create 2D paintings which crawled out of the picture plane and become 3D sculpture.  While this piece looks nothing like her work, it does honor it.  This is a textile, two pieced "quilts" made from fabric I printed in various ways, from which the tubes emerge.  Because they are wired as well as stuffed with cotton cord, they are fairly malleable and can be manipulated to some degree, yet hold their own. 

AMULETTI

Starting a new series, small work this time!  I've been playing around with the idea of magic amulets for the last 6 weeks or so.  Resolution is beginning to emerge...    Magic jewels occluded by a web or nest.   Is it to protect what's inside or those viewing them?
