All Done!

Jacob's Ladder is finished.  My brilliant framer (Colleen at Kathy's Gallery in Torrance) has built a wooden armature for it so that it now can hang on the wall without concern for becoming wonky.  Of course I need to have a box built for it so it can be mailed off to Minneapolis in December for the exhibit. 

I am very lucky that Naomi Guttman, a poet who is in the process of writing an epic poem which features, among much else, a textile artist, will be providing the sound track - YES, really, which will add an auditory experience for the viewer.  She will be writing about Jacob's story.  The show will be on view in January and February in Minnesota, details to follow as the time approaches.

Over-dyed

Here are some of yesterday's pieces and then some other random stuff from my stash with the second round of dye.  Some more successful than others.

Dye Day

Had fun at Susan Willen's yesterday where she had prepared ALL the necessary chemicals and equipment; all I did was fold and dip and scrunch the fabric I'd brought. These are the pieces I'm happy with.  The orange one will be a wildfire line in some future piece while the larger blue bit could be an ocean floor or ....  They are all bigger than they appear as I folded them for the photo.   The rest of the pieces are getting over-dyed today to blend them somewhat more.

Return From Paradise

Salt Spring Island is an artists' haven between Vancouver City and Vancouver Island.  Amazing numbers of talented folks and beautiful galleries to be found there.  Felt-making is the primary textile art practiced there:  world class.    Plus perfect weather.  Plus a knit-bombing event on Granville Island in Vancouver.  Waaaaay fun!!!

The Original Collages

These are the paper collages the four of us we made a few weeks ago.  We are now each making a textile response to each of them so we will end up with 16 pieces.  You can read the makers' names under the postings of my finished pieces.

Collage Interpretation

Here's my textile response to the collage made by Cynthia Catlin.   I'll post all four collages next so you can see the basis for the inspiration.  I have not yet started working on the fourth one.

Collage Series Continued

I dyed and screen printed the fabric of this 12" square.  Meanwhile I had painted the packing tissue and dyed the scrim which I then appliqued to the surface of the piece.   There's a visual depth which occurs because of the range of values.  The piece was inspired by a collage made by Susan Willen, well, actually a small portion of her collage.

CRAZY Two Weeks!!

You can see from the blog posts how busy I've been.   Starting today I'm going to cool my heels for a while.  These photos are from the opening two nights ago of CA101 which is a local exhibit up through next weekend.  One of the pieces is Joolama III, an art quilt inspired by a flight over the Australian outback a few years ago.  The other is some playful examples of deconstructed screen printing.  The opening was very well attended.

Knocking on Heaven's Door

This is the sixth rung on Jacob's Ladder representing the sky.   This one was done with a lot of dimensional hand embroidery and paint.

Teaching at International Quilt Festival Long Beach, CA

 July 28, I'll be teaching at the Saturday Night Sampler from 6:30 - 8:30.  You will need a ticket to get in but it is so worth it as there are lots of teachers and you walk from station to station staying as long as you like, long enough to get the flavor of what is on offer.  You can stay and sit for 30 minutes or just glance and move on.  I will be demoing needle-lace using a water soluble stabilizer.   You will be able to handle a slew of samples.  The variety of results is mind boggling.

CA 101 Mixed Media Exhibition

I will have two pieces in this show at the PVI Gallery at  1700 S. PCH in Redondo Beach, CA.  Grand opening Friday, July 27 from 7-9.  The show is open Friday 7/27 + 8/3 from 5-10; Saturday 2/28 + 8/4 noon-8; Sunday 7/29 + 8/5 noon-6.    Please swing by if you are in the 'hood!  The opening should be festive.

Collage Project

Four of us, textile artists all, have started a new challenge for which we have each made a paper collage (that was a fun play date!).   We have given copies of these to each other so that we each now have four to work with.  The goal for each of us is to respond to each collage by creating four pieces of art 12" x 12".   In the end the group will have 16 unique pieces based on the original four.  Here is a photo of my original collage, a black and white version and the textile I have begun to render from it.  Yesterday I got the copies from the other members so will be making my response to those over the next few months.

Second Rung

Jacob's Ladder is progressing apace.  This step represents the roots and soil just at the earth's surface.  All hand embroidered.
