Coffee Anyone?

This is the next module for Chroma: Brown.  I dyed these bamboo filters and am delighted with how fabulously they came out.  So much texture and interesting colors.  They are very "palm tree-y" which suggests all kind of interesting possibilities down the line.

Exhibition

I will be showing two pieces at the South Bay Contemporary Gallery.  Opening night is August 2 from 6-9 pm.   Ground floor of the Peninsula Center in the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Southern California.   The show will be up until August 31.  Come on by!  Both of these pieces are entirely hand stitched.

Another Chroma:Brown Module

This piece represents the ores and alloys made from the earth's mineral deposits: gold, copper, brass and bronze.  Lots of real metal and metallic paints on synthetic substrates in this piece.

Chroma Browns/Earthtones

This is the beginning of the eighth and last piece in the Chroma series.  The first two modules are complete.  One is the texture module; each of the pieces in the series has one.  The other celebrates ethnic fabrics which are often dyed with natural earth pigments.

Rust on Timtex

Timtex is a sturdy, non-woven synthetic fabric to which rusting products have been applied.
This piece is 16" x 16".

 

 

Formulators Round Three

This is the third piece I did for the Formulators series.   This round has a title, March Garden.  Here is my response to the two pieces I received in this round.   When the whole series is complete we will post the entire adventure.  Meanwhile, enjoy my work!

 

Tapestry

Those who have been following this blog might remember that I started a tapestry on the big Shannock loom about three years ago.  My assistant Jessica, who has been working on it since day one (when she was 11), is still weaving away.   She and I have really been putting in the hours this summer because we want to finish before she graduates from high school in four years!  Have I mentioned that tapestry weaving is a slow and deliberate process?  And we don't have more than a few hours each week to work on it as we both have plenty of other things we need to do with our time!  Here are a few shots of our progress to date.

btw- We are weaving at 90 degrees to the finished piece so we are working from what will be the right side of the piece to the left.

Whew!! Chroma: Black/White/Silver is Done

The Chroma series is now 7/8 complete.  The last piece, Chroma: Brown is now on the drawing board.     Each of the panels is 45" x 72"  Below are all the modules that comprise Black/White/Silver except the texture one which you will find if you scroll down the blog.

Formulators Round Robin

This is the second piece I did for the Formulators series.   I do not feel free to include a photo of the work by the artist whose piece I was responding to, but here is my interpretation of it.   When the whole series is complete we will post the entire adventure.  Meanwhile, enjoy my work!

COGS

This is my first piece in a round robin I'm doing with five other artists.       Our series is based on form and mine starts with Cogs - overlapping, interacting circles.  I painted the ground fabric then printed the cogs from a screen I made.  Used mixed metallic paints for the printed circles.  Lots of embroidered french knots add to the movement.   The series will be complete early in 2015 with new pieces done every two months.

Black/White/Silver

I've just completed the first module of the penultimate piece in the HUGE Chroma series.  Been two years since I started on this eight piece series which now has six 2 meter pieces complete.    It is an exploration of color, its sources and meaning.  My goal is to finish Black/White/Silver by summer's end and the last piece (EarthTones) by the end of the year.  If you have missed any of the previous ones please scroll back and back in this blog to get caught up. 

The pictured module explores textures through weaving and hand made beads.  Each of the pieces in the Chroma series has a texture module. 

Ghost Circles

Another pretty complex art quilt:   I dyed, printed, painted, laminated paper to fabric, applied Angelina, and stitched both on the sewing machine to piece the work and then by hand to quilt it.  The feathery nature of the Angelina gives the work its name.

Roiling Waters

Just finished a new quilt.   All of the underlying fabrics were shibori dyed and screen printed.  I used upcycled household plastics to continue my theme of Gyres (Garbage Patches in our oceans), and then made hundreds of French knots in white and silver threads/yarns to accent the foamy surface.
