Scraping Away

This quilt is touring with the Quilts on the Wall show Drips and Splatters through 2018.   I made the very large piece of needle lace and ice dyed the underlying fabric.  Took a bit of engineering but this is my Year of Needle Lace so I've been mastering the process.

Art Cloth Network at the Miami International Airport

That's my piece Smolder on the left in the center photo - part of my art cloth ON FIRE series.  It's dyed in the bright oranges and reds and then thickened dye painted for the black areas.  It has bits of dyed gauze representing ash.

On Its Way to Tasmania

My piece Jools will be up at the Queen Victoria Art Gallery in Launceston, Tasmania, (that's Australia, y'all!) through October as part of the OzQuilt Network's Art Quilt Australia biannual juried exhibit.   So pleased to be included!

 

My Alaska Workshop

My workshop on July 5 was a great success.  The small town (250 permanent residents) of Cooper Landing, Alaska, welcomed me with 20 creative and energetic ladies signed on for the session.  We did dye transfer onto silk scarves (shown), the crazy wonderful Eternal Scarf which can be turned and turned to show its various sides, and I included a needle lace demo.  Great fun!

Walk Through and Demos at Elemental at the Branch Gallery

Great turn out of interested and interesting visitors who learned how to do needle lace and to make an Eternal scarf.  We walked around and talked about all of the pieces in the exhibit.  2 hours of fun!!

 

Alcatraz #1

Back to work after the excitement of last weekend.  I have finished the surface of the first of 2-3 Alcatraz pieces which come from photos I took last year when visiting the island prison to see Ai WeiWei's installations.  What captured my attention was the coloration and texture of the peeling paint in the individual cells.  A somber and impressive fortress...

After I adapted the photo, the work was printed onto canvas, painted with oil paint sticks and then hand stitched.   The rough surface of the cotton canvas captures the feel of the peeling walls.

 

Branch Gallery Opening

Just a few photos from the 3 hour event yesterday.   There were scores of visitors, fun was had and sales were made.  YIPPEE!!  The show will be up through June 16 with an artist walk through and demo on June 3 at 3pm.  The gallery is open daily so swing by if you are near LAX!

Algae

Pieced and appliqued, this smallish quilt uses some of my favorite colors.   While there are some commercial fabrics there are also a lot of my hand dyes and screen prints.

Elemental - Solo Exhibit

The exhibit is open daily.  Please swing by for one of the events or just for a visit as it suits your schedule.  There are over 40 pieces of my work in this lovely space.

Hereford, TX 1944

More on Burri, abstract mixed media expressionist artist extraordinaire.  He used burlap and other crude substrates that were available.  His work reflects the West Texas plains where he was incarcerated.

 

Hereford, TX 1943

Alberto Burri, prisoner of war, spent 1943-1945 in Hereford, Texas.  This is where he became an artist at the age of 26.  This piece is the first in a series of work on prisons.

4 Random Pieces

 I thought I'd be submitting images of four pieces to Oz Quilt Network's updated member section.  Turns out I have to pay for more than one so I'm putting them here instead!  Think I'll send Pick Up Sticks as the one (free) to represent me this time. 

Round Robin #2

The next in the still unnamed round robin resulted from a trip to the glorious Hauser Wirth and Schimmel gallery in the Arts District in downtown LA.     I was inspired by the Schwitter paper collages in neutral tones.   Mine has various cut away areas and uses a wider array of materials than he did including metal screen, silk worm casings and many different fibers.  It may become the initial piece in a love poetry and/or Shakesperean Sonnet series I've been toying with for a year or so.  Who knows???

 

Round Robin #1

I am participating with five other textile artists in an as yet unnamed round robin.  We meet bimonthly and visit an exhibit in southern CA where we see all sorts of fantastic artwork.  This piece was inspired in part by  a work from artist Barbara Murak which was on display at the Fowler Museum at UCLA in a group show called the Box Project in 2016.    She did a red needle lace vessel which glowed.   My work uses a similar technique though quite different materials.  Mine creates reds from magentas and rich oranges instead of USING red materials.  Additionally, mine is created in waves as were several of the works in the original show as they needed to fit neatly into a 16" square box so were gracefully scrunched.  Mine is intentionally rippled to honor those pieces which I saw with that effect.
